What was your 1st ever job? Did you like it?

Back in early Highschool, I worked a few hours a week helping out in the office for my local Chinese School for my first job. I liked it because it was one of the first times where I felt like I was doing something productive.

If you could travel anywhere this year, where would you go?

I would travel to China to visit my relatives. I have not been to China since I was in middle school, so it has been many years since I’ve seen them.

What’s the most important thing on your “bucket list”

I would love to try eating the most popular foods from around the world.

-If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

If I could only eat one food for the rest of my life, it would probably be chicken. Chicken is one of my favorite foods already and it can be prepared in several different ways giving a variety of taste so I don’t get sick of it as fast.

What is one of your favorite things to do outside of work, why?

In my free time, I like chatting and playing video games with friends.

alex wong

Where is WordPress Going?

Where is WordPress Going?

Into the future with WordPress and what’s changing

WordPress was originally only created to be used as a blogging platform. However, over the years it has grown to one of the largest website platforms in the world! WordPress is constantly updating its platform to create a more functional developer experience and better experience for its users.

Every so often, WordPress has a large platform release, such as 5.0. This is not a small jump from like 4.7.1 to 4.9.1; this was a pretty significant release. If you have yet to update your site to version 5.0 “Bebo” or even apply the 5.2.1 and 5.2.2 maintenance releases, you have a lot in store for you!

One large change with “Bebo” was the Gutenberg editor with blocks. This has been a controversial update across the web design and developer community. The new editor acts as an easy way to build out a page, using drag and drop boxes with boxes for paragraphs, headings, images, buttons, lists, and code. For beginners and casual users, this is a great update! It’s quick and easy and can get the job done. However, for users who have been using WordPress for a while with a developed skill set working with the previous version, the new update can seem very limiting and basic. Additionally, there is the possibility that plugins and themes might break with the update. Change is always a tricky thing; it will be interesting to see how Gutenberg continues to function through updates and see users’ opinions of it as they become more familiar with it.

5.2 "Jaco"

The 5.2 update, “Jaco,” added some new features working towards site health and safety. Building off of the 5.1 “Betty” update, there are two pages focused on the debugging process. One helps with common configuration problems, and the other allows developers to input debugging information for general site users.

The second update is a quick solution to help with the ‘white screen of death.’ You know, that horrible pit in your stomach, heart racing when you see it white screen that kindly informs you that there are serious errors on your site. 5.2 has created an easier way for the admin to go in and fix these errors, including the option to pause plugins and themes that may be causing your problems.

where is wordpress going

5.2.1

As a maintenance release, there is less to find in 5.2.1 than there was in 5.2 but we as always, we are glad that continual maintenance is being performed! 5.2.1 mainly fixed 33 bugs that were impacting 5.2, improving things ranging from the block editor to general site health. Of course, the next update was not far behind…

5.2.2

Which brings us to 5.2.2! This update gave us an additional 13 fixes for bugs surrounding the same areas that 5.2.1 did. Again, these fixes are greatly appreciated but nothing super drastic for us to call out.

We know that version 5.3 is on its way – and while nothing is confirmed bedsides the fact it will be released by the end of 2019, we would guess that it will come out sometime in the next month or two. Here’s to hoping for faster speeds (please please please), more improvements to the block editor and further build out to the new site health features!

If you have a website and are still stuck in an older version of WordPress and don’t know how to go about upgrading it, or if you have experienced issues with the update, we are here to help. With this update, you may experience issues with plugins and features that are custom-built on your site that aren’t compatible with the updated platform. Some plugins are older and may not be supported anymore, so they won’t be tested or work properly on the newer sites. These issues could interrupt your business if you rely on online traffic for sales. Contact us for a free evaluation today!

What was your 1st ever job? Did you like it?

I was a figure skater so I ended up as an ice skating instructor for the ice rink I skated at! I taught the three and four year old’s in the first ‘Snow Plow Sam’ level. Picture little kids all bundled up with their helmets and mittens, pushing around orange cones just trying to stay on their feet. By far one of the best first jobs I could have had! I got to do what I loved and was able to help others learn the sport I was passionate about.

If you could travel anywhere this year, where would you go?

New Zealand & Australia! I think that these two countries would be incredible to explore – I’d love to go hiking and explore the beautiful forests and waterfalls as well as see the iconic cities and experience the culture there!

What’s the most important thing on your “bucket list”

I’d really like to live abroad for a period of time. I studied abroad in Nice, France for a semester my junior year of college and had the most amazing time.

I was traveling Europe, learning about the different cultures, practicing my French and eating a lot of really good food. It expanded my worldview and make me more confident and independent. I’d love to go back and spend more time in France or another country in Europe, living and working in a different place, learning the language, and having the opportunity to travel more!

What’s your favorite book and why?

I CAN’T PICK! I love too many books! How about some highlights instead: Harry Potter, Daring Greatly, Pride & Prejudice, Uninvited, The Book of Lost Things

What is your biggest pet peve?

I can’t stand lateness! Both for myself and others. I hate holding up the group or missing out on part of an event because I wasn’t there right at the start. When I was younger I would even tell my sister we had to leave five minutes before we actually did to make sure that we would get places on time! And since I value punctuality so much, I hate when others are late to things because I have been the friend waiting 15 minutes for everyone else to get to dinner too many times to count!

What is one of your favorite things to do outside of work, why?

I love to cook and bake! It’s so fun to be able to try new recipies and it’s relaxing to spend time doing something I like. I didn’t have a lot of time to cook while I was in school so it’s nice to be able to come home and have a chance to make myself more than just spaghetti and chicken!

rachel brumagin

Do you have any pets, if not, what would be your ultimate pet?

I do not have any pets *yay rental housing rules* but I would love either a dog or a cat! I grew up with having both of them so I’m both a dog and a cat person. For a more ‘ultimate’ answer I would have to say a red panda since they are my favorite animal but I really have no desire to take care of a red panda!

What was/is your favorite subject in school and why?

In high school I LOVED math. I have a very analytical brain and I loved that in math there was only ever one answer. Either you did it right or you didn’t, and then you could figure out what you did wrong.
In college my favorite subject was business, seeing as it was my major. However I also minored in French and Economics which I find super interesting! I love the way that languages connect people (and allow you to travel) and I found it so interesting to study the market in an in depth way and to learn all the nuances of the global economy.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

Probably pizza, because it would be very easy to change the structural elements of a pizza to create different meals that in no way include bread, sauce or cheese. BUT the meal could still look like a pizza and thus be still considered pizza. It’s all about the loopholes people!

Social Media Tips for Small Businesses

Steps for an Effective Social Media Marketing Plan

Social media is one of the best ways for you to promote your company, we know that sometimes it seems like a daunting task, and it is never-ending. But you don’t need to worry! Evolving your social media strategy is just one more thing that you can do to improve your business and connect with your audience. We’ve collected a few key tips for anyone looking to start or update their social media pages.

Have a plan

This is a good rule of thumb for pretty much anything that you are trying out for the first time! Before you create all of your accounts and start posting left and right, you need to outline what you are planning to do with your social media. First, you will want to pick the platforms that your target market is most likely to interact with, it’s a waste of time to manage additional platforms that no one is interacting with. A good set to start is with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn. Of course you can switch those up depending on your company or as you see how users are interacting with your posts in the future.

Next, you will want to determine how often you are planning on posting. Some companies post multiple times a day, while others might only post once a week. Decide what is reasonable for your marketing team and create a calendar so that you can keep track of all of your posts.

Social media plan

Decide what your posts will entail. While you might think that it’s a great idea to push out promotional materials with every post, people will quickly get sick of a company that is just trying to sell them something. Make sure that you are posting a variety of things, such as blog posts, funny pictures, inspirational phrases, and photos around your office, along with your promotional posts.

Decide your social media personality

Social media gives you a chance to show your audience more about your company, creating a more personable side to your brand. It’s important that what you post and share reflects what you want your brand to be. If your company already has a clear focus, concentrate on transferring that to your social platforms. If you aren’t quite there yet, use this as a chance to discover and build your brand. This can look like picking a specific color scheme or aesthetic to try to create throughout your posts. Once you have an idea of what you want to be, make sure that each of your posts adds to your set brand image.

A good place to start is by researching what others are doing. While the obvious route might just be to look at your competitor’s social platforms, it’s a good idea to check out some successful platforms of companies not in your industry. You want to stand out, right? This is a great way to spark some ideas for your own page, allowing you to develop the perfect personality for your business online.

instagram social

Take advantage of what’s out there for free!

So you have your perfect plan for what you want your social media platforms to look like and have the best idea for your first post. But you’re a small company without a photography team and don’t know how you are going to create the image you want to use. My friend, let me introduce you to stock photos! Stock photos are simply beautiful images that you can download right from the internet! While there are some that you may have to pay for, there are tons of stock photo sites that let you download the images for free! Additionally, with stock photos, you don’t have to worry about legal issues surrounding image ownership – they are created to be used by people like you! Here is a list of some of our favorite free stock photo websites:

Two of our other favorite sites are Canva and Crello! Created as a graphic design site specifically for people who are not professional graphic designers, Canva lets you easily design and create your own content. They offer their own stock photos as well as design templates, while also giving you the choice to start from scratch and upload your own images. You can even upload your logo and program in your company colors for quick reference! While you have the option to pay for an account with some extra fancy features, you can do plenty with what their free account has to offer. This is a great alternative to hiring a full-time graphic designer and lets you explore your creative side!

Make it interactive

The whole point of social media is to easily interact with your customers and keep your company at the forefront of their minds. Thus, make sure that you are actually interacting with them and aren’t just having a one-way conversation. Get to know your customer base and target audience. Reply to their comments and start conversations about your posts. Learn what content customers are looking for when scrolling through frequently asked questions in the comments. Find other accounts that you can repost and make connections with that help build your brand relations.

In addition to interacting on your end, encourage your viewers to interact with your platforms. Create call to actions in your comments, encouraging people to check out your new blog posts, ask people to comment in response to a question, hold contests, create polls, and encourage them to like or share your posts on their own pages! As long as you are providing solid content, people will want to interact with your brand. And interaction results in conversion, which should be one of your main end goals!

social media interactive

Creating a positive presence for your company on social media will do amazing things for your business. While it takes time to build up a large following and get yourself situated in the world of social media, these tips should help you get started!

Smart Writing or Writing Smart – How To Overcome Exaggerated Posts

Smart Writing Or Writing Smart?

Smart Writing or Writing Smart - How To Overcome Exaggerated Posts

Blogging is more popular than ever, freelance bloggers, hobby bloggers, company bloggers, and more all make up the intense blogging community. Various stats have proven blogs’ success and positive impacts on companies, including increased visibility. It is recommended that every company puts out 3-4 blog posts per WEEK to have maximum efficiency for traffic & leads. Here are some more blogging statistics for you from our friends over at Codeless.

  • Companies that publish 16+ blogs per month get nearly 3.5x more traffic than those that publish 0-4 month
  • Marketers who prioritize blogging efforts are 13x more likely to see positive ROI
  • Longer in-depth blogs generate 9x more leads than short ones
  • 60% of consumers feel engaged/positive with a brand or company after reading custom content on their blog

But, we can obviously gather from these few statistics the importance of blogging & the positive effect it can have on your business. But how many times have you clicked into a blog trying to learn something or get some information, only to read a few sentences into the article and have no clue what just happened…okay, maybe that truly hasn’t ever happened to you…But I’ll tell you from personal experience…IT HAPPENS!! As a fellow blogger, it can be easy to be carried away by your true passion for the subject and desire to bestow your knowledge onto anyone who will possibly stumble upon your writings, but we are here to tell you that isn’t always the best approach to have when writing your blogs and resources for your audience. So, how do you overcome overly technical & exaggerated posts?

#1 Write Like You’re Talking to a Novice…

Chances are, you will be! Writing to a novice of your shared interest will help you get back on track & only talk about the things that are important to know while starting. Try to remember back when your interest was sparked in this specific topic & make sure you are providing the information that a novice would want to know, not only that but in a way that a novice will understand, ditch the long words & explain theories…stick to the basics that make up the topic – remember you can always do a more in-depth blog as needed or as requested. Going beyond that, as you get into topics that a more intermediate-level person might be interested in, it’s still smart to write in a way that conveys your knowledge without stumping your readers. This is not a skill that will most likely come easily; it will have to be practiced & put into effect over time.

Smart writing

#2 Break Down Topics Into Series...

Breaking topics down into various parts is a great way to get more content out of one topic – especially if the topic is generally just more lengthy in the way it needs to be explained & understood. After all, you cannot stick to writing novice-level blogs forever, so when you do get the chance to write about a more intermediate-type topic & you need to go more in-depth, do your best to break it up into multiple blogs & postings. This will help keep your blog easier to comprehend without overwhelming your readers, as well as give them something to look forward to reading as you write & publish your next post. A great way to go about this is while finishing one blog, promoting your next one with a release date, as well as a tagline to help your readers want to come back to catch the next bit of information you will release!

smart writing

#3 Go In-depth Without Going Overboard or Losing Your Readers…

This is a hard rule for anyone who is interested in a specific topic – especially a topic that might just be generally harder to understand. Our advice for this is to go into detail and go in-depth, all the while being cautious of how you are doing so. A great way to expand on a subject is by using simple analogies, imagery, & other resources to help your readers get the most out of what information you are providing them.
It’s important to put content out that sparks your reader’s interest & keeps it! These tips are just a few guidelines to help you work on overcoming lengthy, wordy, & over the top posts that have the tendency to lose your readers’ interest and focus on smart writing to get the traffic and visibility you deserve.

Why Choose WordPress For Your New Website

10 REASONS TO CHOOSE WORDPRESS FOR YOUR NEW WEBSITE

So you’ve decided you need a new website, your old one is on its way out…or possibly already been out for months now, it doesn’t have the functionality you want & your current site just isn’t keeping up with your competitors…but where to begin? Most people generally do not get excited about the time, expense & research that goes into a website redesign. So, where do you begin? Generally, the first and foremost order of business is deciding with what platform are going to use for your new website, with so many “easy to use” website builders, such as WordPress, Wix, Gator, BigCommerce, Shopify, Webbly, Squarespace & more, we have laid out 10 reasons why we believe WordPress is the platform you should use for your new website, or website redesign.
Many people think of WordPress as a blogging platform only, this is how WordPress started out and got its reputation, but really, WordPress has drastically evolved throughout many years to be so much more than just a blogging platform, now you can host websites, build custom themes, and upload personal plugins to make sure your website is the best that it can be for your users. We decided it would be helpful for you to see why we support WordPress and why we suggest it for your new website, so here are 10 reasons why you should choose the WordPress platform for your new site…

content marketing ideas

1. Many people who are using WordPress for their website are not necessarily web developers or website designers. WordPress is a great option for these people, they have various already built “themes” and “plugins” that will help you build a professional website without needing prior web development or design knowledge. There are easy-to-use options for all of our non “tech savvy” folk out there.

2. WordPress is completely versatile. You can create anything from a blog to an e-commerce site, a product-based site, a membership website, and pretty much anything else you can think of. It’s customizable for your desires and wishes

3. WordPress is SEO friendly – SEO is an important part of marketing today. Making sure that your website is being found & indexed by search engines is important, and according to Google, WordPress is 99% SEO friendly. So, if you are looking to bring your SEO to the next level, WordPress is a great tool to use for your website.

4. WordPress is a FREE & Open Source- there’s got to be a catch, right? Well, in the spirit of all things out in the open, you will need to buy your domain and pay for hosting and various other costs, but the actual software, WordPress, is free.

5. Themes & Plugins give you complete customizable options – if you can dream it, you can bring it to completion. Not only does WordPress provide you with various pre-built themes & plugins, but you also have options to build your customized theme & plugins for whatever you could think of. To read about 24 WordPress plugins for your business website, check out this article: https://www.wpbeginner.com/showcase/24-must-have-wordpress-plugins-for-business-websites/

6. Safe & Secure – WordPress is supreme in the level of security measures that they take for their customers. They have staff that is updating CMS consistently, along with all the plugins that go hand in hand. Of course, to protect yourself, it’s best to only download plugins from WordPress itself or trusted sources. Read more about WordPress security here.

7. Mobile Friendly – This is a HUGE advantage today. In a world where most people have cell phones & surf the web constantly, your mobile online presence is crucial! You have to make sure that your website is not only available to your mobile users but also that they have a good mobile experience, that they can see the important pieces & parts, that images aren’t cut off or covering important text & so on & so forth. Being mobile-friendly is more important than ever. Read about it here: https://www.augustash.com/our-blog/mobile-friendly-websites-2019

8. Easy Social Media Integration – WordPress offers a simple way for your users & website visitors to interact with & be a part of your social media. This is especially great if you have a previously established online presence or a previously established social media presence. Feeding one off the other is a great way to build your company & business.

9. Scheduling makes blogging easy – not everyone has time to sit down 3 times a week to bust out a blog…we get it. So sit down for one day, bust out 3 blogs & schedule them for 3 different days! WordPress makes it easy to do that. You can schedule posts as far out in advance as you want to make sure you don’t fall behind in keeping your readers updated. Take a look at how to create the perfect blog schedule for your company here.

10. One of the BEST parts about WordPress is that it just keeps improving. With the community of users that are currently a part of WordPress, the site just keeps improving. It’s a great platform that only keeps getting better.

6 Things To Consider While Updating Your Website

6 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHILE UPDATING YOUR WEBSITE

It’s time for an updated website…have you been noticing that your current site just isn’t keeping up with your competition; it’s outdated, clunky, too busy, or too plain. There’s no option for buying your products online, and your site just doesn’t reflect your business the way you want it to. Does this sound familiar? Keeping up with your online presence can be challenging, and now that you’ve realized your need for a change, you must begin the daunting task of beginning the updating process…
So, here are a few things to keep in mind as you begin searching for the right way to update your website so that you can make a statement as you jump into the 2019 world wide web with your new online presence for your company.

updating your website

First, take some time to check out your competition…they say imitation is the best form of flattery, but we are telling you, DON’T IMITATE YOUR COMPETITION! Take a look at your competition, check out what they are doing, then take the time to get a game plan going of how you can do it better. This will be the most beneficial thing in the long run. Secondly, think about your website layout & don’t be afraid to change it! Where do your current website viewers go? Where do they want to go? What are your hot products or pages? Use Google Analytics to help you investigate each of these things so that you can plan out & revamp your website in a way that is user friendly & specifically created for YOUR desired & current users. Third, more content is not always better content – keep your site clean & simple, modern & to the point. Too much text where it is not needed can ultimately hurt your user experience. Most of the time, people want a quick experience; they don’t want to sit on your site for 4 hours trying to sort through the information they need from the unnecessary fluff that happens to be in there. Keep your content as simple as possible. Fourth tip is to use the opportunity to re-evaluate your URL’s. If your websites been around for awhile, chances are you didn’t give much thought to your current web addresses & url’s on your site. Now is a great opportunity to change that. A page URL can affect various things, from user experience to search engine ranking. It’s helpful to get a plan together of what you want your URLs to portray as a website. The fifth thing to keep in mind is to secure your website(if it isn’t already). Making sure that your site is secure is important, not only to your users, but now, its even important to Google. Lastly, consider Search Engine Optimization – SEO is an increasingly important part of websites everywhere, and it’s no easy feat…seo has many moving parts that can make it tough to grasp. More power to the businesses, free lancers, bloggers, & other website owners who do SEO for themselves, but we also would advise that you consider hiring a Digital Marketing Agency that knows SEO well to assist you with the ins & outs of Search Engine Optimization.

These are our 6 quick topics to keep in the back of your mind as you consider a website update. Most importantly don’t be afraid to change up your website & take risks to make sure that you are providing something fresh for your audience.

How Can I Create A Logo For My Website?

Create a logo

Creating a Logo that Lasts...

Creating a logo is part of an important part of branding your business. Branding your business is one of the most important things that you will do in the life of your company. Branding is all about coming up with everything that will represent your company, your website presence, your logo, your social media interaction & so much more. Your product, website, and customer service should all reflect a specific, unique, and unified brand for your consumers. So, what ARE some things to consider as you begin the process of creating a logo for your website?

Number One:

A Logo is just one small part of this process and is something that takes a lot of time and thought – I mean, you want to be with your company for many years, right?
So, take the time, do some research & take a look at logos that have not only been successful but also stood the test of time for various companies.

Number Two:

Less is more when it comes to your logo. Keep your design simple, as this will risk less as elements go out of style as the years pass, keeping it simple will lessen the number of things with the option to go out of style.

creating a lasting logo

Remember to keep your logo with correct sizing, your brand should be able to shrink for a business card all the way up to a billboard and not lose any of the crispness of the original, this is an important design aspect to getting your logo ready for use.

Number Three:

Many entrepreneurs decide that it’s a good idea to try and design a logo for themselves, but in the long run, this can end up costing more money than investing in a professional graphic designer from the get-go. Professional designers know what colors to use & how to execute a plan in order to make you a logo that will accurately not only represent your company but also in a way that will last & stand the test of time. Even if you have a vision for your logo, it is best to seek help from a professional to make sure that your logo is being created correctly & also in a way that will positively impact your business.

Number Four:

Make your logo a way to tell your story…sounds cliché, right? But your logo can be a representation of what your company is all about, the story that you want your consumers to see & hear when looking at your company. A story will help your consumer connect with your company & the people behind it!

Celebrating the World Wide Web’s 30th Birthday

The World Changed 30 years ago, today we celebrate...

Tim Berners-Lee, a smart man born in London, England set out to change the world. Berners-Lee graduated from The Queen’s College, Oxford with a bachelor of arts degree in physics. While still in college he made a computer out of an old television set that he bought second hand. In his early 30’s & by October of 1990 Tim Berners-Lee had developed a proposal, explaining his idea & had already created the 3 main parts of what would make the World Wide Web work, HTML, URL, & HTTP. Each of these parts are an integral piece to the puzzle he created. The first page of the web went completely live in late 1991.

Tim Berners-Lee

It didn’t catch on like wild fire though, the WWW took time; starting in Universities & Laboratories. Today, about half of the world is online & almost 2 billion websites exist. Berners-Lee is now using the celebration of 30 years  up and running to touch on the topic of hackers & some of the unethical things that are being done on the web. He stated that he wants technology to be a vehicle for “public good”. On Monday he put out a “contract” that shows what he hopes the web can become. Going forward, Tim Berners-Lee hopes good for the WWW & wants only to see the world united through this beautiful piece of technology.

Effective Photo Marketing Techniques & How to Use Them

Effective Photo Marketing Techniques: How to Use Them

Photography & Image Marketing: Ideas to Help You Your Business

Photo marketing is a very common topic in the marketing world today, does it really exist? Could it actually be considered its own branch of marketing? We decided to collect the facts on photo marketing and let you decided for yourself.

So, what is “photo marketing”? It’s a fairly simple idea: photo marketing is the use of marketing through visual aspects on your website or other means.  Utilizing photos and visuals for your marketing and different materials could be one of the most important aspects, and possibly cost cost-effective way you could take advantage of for your campaigns.

When you are building your marketing and promotional material for print or on your website, you want to make sure that you have a plan for what you want as far as content.  Your content can be images, photography, text, PDFs, and much more.   On most business websites, it’s a good idea not to get too carried away with the amount of text that you use. There are minimal limits and search engine best practices to remember regarding the text and content.  Pictures and photography can realistically make or break your site. Humans are visual beings and thrive on stimulation.  It’s a great way to show people what you offer, what they are getting, and explain your product without a ton of text.  The consumer likes to see what they are getting into, and honestly, it’s a great way to market your product or service.

Photo marketing can be done with more than just your website and promotional material.  When you think about photography,  you think about Social Media as well.  Instagram specifically, has quickly grown to be one of the most popular ways to market your business services or products through visual representation.

Being that Instagram was made for image based marketing through photos and images, take advantage of the opportunity and make your feed one worth following.

1. Display your product in a new way, make it aesthetically pleasing for your followers and prospect clients. Businesses need to be careful with product photos, it’s important to make sure the layout and way that you display doesn’t form a “spammy” look.

2. Go behind the scenes. Show your clients the process behind the product or the service. Highlight the pieces and parts of your company that make you different from any one else out there. Break down your business into easily understandable bite-sized pieces.

3. Showcase WHY a consumer needs your product…what is the need you are filling? What is the problem you are solving? Show that! Consumers want to fix their problems, so show them that you can!

4. Don’t be timid, show the fun parts of your company. It could be showing your employees getting crazy on a Friday, or possibly a perk that your consumers receive for being a loyal customer. Be honest and open about your business, showing that you value the people you work with and are around.

With anything on the web, you also want to make sure that you have content that can be optimized for your site and also the search engines like Google and Bing.   Search engine optimization is what you will use to help filter traffic to your site. This is a process in which you place tags and metadata on your site for search engines to read your site and crawl it more effectively.   From naming your pages, pictures, and images, and optimizing your content for organic search results, you could be spending less on PPC advertising.

5 Quick Tips About Search Engines

5 Quick Search Engine Tips

Search Engines can be confusing to understand & for many business owners, SEO is perplexing and over complicated.

We want to help you understand search engines a little better so that in turn you can be more successful with more understanding in your business and SEO endeavor. So, here are 5 quick and simple tips that will help you and your understanding of search engines.

1. Search Engines do 2 things: Crawl & Index

So, what does that mean? First, Moz.com compares a search engine crawling your site to a subway; everything is connected. They will investigate your content, going from page to page, checking links, images, paths, load times, and everything else. Second, indexing is simply the rank that Google or other search engines give your website based on relevance and popularity for any given phrase or keyword that is searched for by a user.

2. Algorithms are constantly changing

Although never confirmed, Google is said to change and tweak their algorithms DAILY! That’s right, daily! Many people get worried because they don’t know when Google is making these changes, as they don’t inform us when algorithms are changing. But, not to worry, unless you are practicing some shady SEO, you will not be affected much by these small tweaks and changes. (most of the time)

3. Search Engines are not senseless

…and they’re only getting smarter. Things like keyword stuffing and duplicate content, bad SEO tactics like that get noticed by search engines. Not only do they take note of these bad SEO tactics, but many times and most times, you will get penalized and keep note of your track record going forward. These things are not easily forgotten and can really affect your website and companies rank going forward.

4. Quality over quantity is noted

Search Engines as they crawl your page, check on things like readability, content value, etc. This is all to make sure that the content will be applicable for consumers. It’s important to realize and note that the content on your website is not taken lightly. As a business owner making sure that your content is useful, and provides something valuable to society is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your website today!

5. Speed is Critical

Don’t ever sacrifice speed. Page speed is a crucial part of your rank with search engines. Just a second delay in load time can change your bounce rate drastically, and make it much harder to keep consumers on your site. That higher bounce rate can affect your search engine ranks pretty significantly. Long story short, pay attention to speed, you won’t regret it.

We hope these search engine tips have been helpful for your company’s SEO and other marketing endeavors. Contact us for help getting started with SEO!

Google Updating Mobile First Index Review

Google Updating Mobile First Index Review

Mobile First Index Update?

Mobile-first Indexing means that Google will mainly use the mobile version of your websites content when it comes to indexing and ranking. In the past, a websites desktop version was mostly used in the index but now because the majority of users are searching with a device, the index will primarily be geared towards those users with the mobile versions of the websites. Here is a short blurb on

Google Updating Mobile First Index?
Search Engine Journal: Roger Montti

“The search community took to Twitter and Facebook to note an increase in mobile first inclusion notices from Google Search Console. Strong anecdotal evidence points to significant update in Google’s mobile first index. Many are reporting unprecedented levels of email alerts from Google Search Console that sites they are monitoring have been migrated to the Google’s Mobile First Index.

Is this a Google Algorithm Update?

No. I would not call this a Google Algorithm Update. This is a mobile index update, the index appears to be growing. A Google Update generally refers to a change in the ranking algorithm. What the search marketing community may be noticing is a change to the index that Google users to begin the ranking process. The change being noted is that more websites have been included into Google’s mobile first index.”

Blog Management & How to Overcome Writers Block

How To Overcome Writers Block

Writer’s block…everyone has heard of it, and chances are, if you have ever blogged for your business, written a report, have done independent blogging or any type of writing that is longer than a couple of paragraphs, you may have experienced it too. Just in case you haven’t heard of this mysterious confusion, writer’s block is defined by the dictionary as “the condition of being unable to think of what to write or how to proceed with writing.” But others have a different approach to this “condition”, Jeff Goins claims that “writer’s block is an excuse. Nothing more.” So, what is keeping your creative juices from flowing?

Most people agree that the cause of writer’s block more than likely originates within the author, so here are some ideas of what could be causing you to experience a shortage in inspiration and how you can take steps to fix it.

FEAR

fear of writers block

The most common cause of writer’s block is fear. Fear covers many facets of what could be causing your creativity to flee you. Who or what causes all this fear to exist within us? Maybe it was criticism of your writing in the past, or a bad experience with someone telling you that you wouldn’t make it. Although these are understandable reasons to fear moving forward with your writing, they are not valid excuses, and we as writers need to move forward, conquering this fear.

SELF-DOUBT

Most writers who experience self-doubt are scared that their idea isn’t good enough or that their article writing won’t make the cut. There are many resources and ways to overcome self-doubt as a writer so that you can move forward in confidence. We all have a little self-doubt in each of us every day, whether it’s big or the little.

HIGH STANDARDS

tips to overcome writers block

High standards are a common cause for writers block. Authors and writers have this idea of the amazing product they will produce after the first draft, and that simply isn’t practical…now don’t get me wrong, this may happen once in a blue moon, but more than likely, the first draft you write will need some work and revision. Give yourself some wiggle room and a reality check to make sure you aren’t being blocked by your unreachable standard.

EXHAUSTION

tired

General exhaustion and sleep deprivation can play a huge roll in our performance as writers and authors. Exhaustion comes in every shape, size, and variation, but ultimately it can affect more than just our physical performance. Fatigue challenges your body and your mind. It can take a huge toll on our creative and thought process too!

LAZINESS/LACK OF STRUCTURE

Many artists claim that structure limits their creative ability, but we disagree…structure forces one to be productive and create content. In other words, structure kicks laziness to the curb. It doesn’t matter if the content isn’t top-notch or needs some revision; most people experiencing writer’s block will just be happy to have written something after a dry spell.

Spectrum Net Designs Logo

After reading all the different possibilities of why you could be experiencing writer's block, here is how we suggest moving forward...

1. Find the root of what is causing your lack of zing and acknowledge the issue. Are you just tired, or are you placing too high an expectation on what should be just a “rough draft”? Whatever the cause may be, acknowledge it so you can find the right course of action.

2. Give yourself some grace…remember, it’s OK not to write knockout content 24/7. Professional sports players do not play 1005 every single game, and you don’t have to either! Permit yourself to write some bad articles, ones that no one will read, but get them out!

3. Start new with some structure. Get a plan of action and execute. Structure may not be a favorite topic in the creative world, but having a plan will almost surely help you overcome writer’s block.

4. Listening to music always helps relax your mind and get your creative juices flowing. It could be any type of genre. Some people get inspired by country music, others by rap; there isn’t a right or wrong here, it is all about inspiration.

5. Change your environment. Find a place that speaks to you; it’s OK to take a step out of a constricting environment.

6. Some other things that you can do to get your creativity to flow would be just to walk away, find an activity or play a game, read a book, go for a walk or jog, spend time with someone special, or drink some coffee

There are many things to get yourself back on track with your writing, so find what works for you and do it!
